What do you think?

What draws you to a pattern?? Is it the samples on the cover or the design?? I have wondered this question for a long time. I see books and patterns with gorgeous quilts on the covers only to discover they are mostly a common pattern that has been redone.

I've used this pattern for years. It's the one I use to teach beginners to quilt. It is one sheet of paper that was from a quilt class many years ago. But it's still my favorite for teaching the basics of quilting. Do you think they look different made up with different fabrics and color ways?

I do so agree that many patterns are re-done over and over again - perhaps that's why I find the whole copyright thing so bewildering. I am not sure what draws me to a particular design but I do know that sometimes I can be put off if it is not shown in one of my favourite colour schemes. Sometimes I have to stop, look again and tell myself that it is the colour I don't like and actually I love the design! It is always amazing how different a block can look with changes of colour or value as shown in your lovely photos.

Colors *definitely* make a difference to me ... that's what I'm drawn to as much as the pattern itself! Even though all of these are lovely, lovely pieces, there's one that really strikes me! :)

They are all lovely quilts. Reminds me of the old favorite Warm Wishes pattern but with a twist. Yes, color choice makes them all look a bit different.

So love the blue & white tea set, Jocelyn. Well, you know me & pink anything ... the quilts are all gorgeous.

Did you see my Tatiana's first 'quilt' stitching a couple posts ago ... take a peek, if not.

Have a beautiful weekend.

So versatile! Wow, I would never have known they were all from the same pattern. Beautiful quilts. I love the last one - those colors are gorgeous!

How funny you brought this up. I was thinking about this the other day and then I noticed on Pinterest pretty much all the quilts I Pin are scrappy quilts! Doesn't much matter the pattern, but scrappy!!

I think the fabrics definitely draw me to a pattern. However I do look at a pattern and try to visualize it with fabrics/colors I like.

That is a really good question - I think it's the colors that draw me in, the way they work with the design. I'm always amazed seeing a quilt done in different colorways - I never recognize it! I wouldn't have known those quilts were all from the same pattern.

Most times it's the colours that draw me to a pattern and then the pattern itself, sometimes just the choice of colours/combinations used in a pattern turns me away from making/purchasing it :) Barb.

We are all drawn to our own colors, styles, prints, etc. that speak to us. I love handyed and batik fabrics best and anything looks good in those fabrics to me. So many books are like you say the same old patterns but done in new fresh "today" colors, which give them an updated look. Most of the traditional quilts are made from old patterns that are in the public domain (meaning no copyright problems and anyone can make and sell and reproduce in books). Quilts do look different by choosing certain colors and placing them in certain places on the block. Some colors pop out and some recede so that gives the block a different look too. I look at the design of the quilt because I know I will choose my colors and it will look different from any photo. But I may be drawn to quilts because of the colors in them.

Definitely, I'm drawn to a pattern first by the colors. Because I'm fairly new to quilting, if a pattern looks "too busy", I'm ready to look at something different.

Absolutely, both the colors and how the blocks are arranged will make a quilt look entirely different. If I were a designer, it would be most difficult to come up with the best photo for the package/book cover that would draw the most attention.

Fabric, color and the placement of dark/light draw me to a pattern.
